1929- Black Tuesday - The Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression

Black Tuesday 1929

In 1929 the stock market crashed, followed by the Great Depression- a dark period of economic depression and unemployment.

Wall Street 1929

" By 1933 nearly half of America's banks had failed and unemployment was approaching 15 million people, or 30% of the workforce." 1

In a panic, people rushed to withdraw their life savings before the banks failed.

The period was embodied in the song "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" sung below by Bing Crosby.
